Writing
- Address elected officials as “The Honorable...”
- Always include a return mailing address, even when emailing.
- Postcards or FAX are best for security reasons.
- Writing to the appropriate elected official about your particular issue can save you time. Otherwise, you may be referred to a different office.
However, don't be afraid to start somewhere.
- Generally speaking, write to YOUR representative. Spamming elected officials is not effective.
- Sending form letters and postcards is fine. However, it's always a good idea to include a short handwritten note.
- Use a polite tone, even if you are unhappy about something.
Calling
- Assuming you are a constituent, identify yourself as one.
- Be prepared to give your contact information.
- When leaving a message 1) speak slowly and clearly; 2) spell your name unless it is obvious; and,
3) state your address and a phone number.
